Papunya - A Place Made After the Story book

In 1971, art teacher Geoffrey Bardon was posted to the Papunya settlement in Central Australia.  His interest in the traditional sand mosaics and the powerful, ancient culture of this dispossessed and degraded people, his empathy with their artists and his patient encouragement won the confidence of the tribal elders.

Bardon taught the Aboriginal artists to paint, thus triggering a great surge of creativity.  The Western Desert Painting Movement is now one of the wonders of the modern art world.  This art movement helped restore the cultural pride of a deeply spiritual people, and provided the rest of the world with new ways of seeing.
